The Hyatt Regency Hakone is overall a very, very good hotel. The location is good, the hotel will pick you up from Odawara Station, the staff is phenomenal, and the rooms are large. However, the furniture throughout is dated and needing to be refreshed. The on-property Japanese restaurant still feels very fresh though and is a highlight. The onsen (male experience) is good, but there are likely better in the area. The staff are what make this a really great experience. All are very personable and, at least for me, greeted me by name almost 100% of the time. At $300 a night, this was a nice treat, but could use a refresh in certain areas. Overall 7.5-8/10

We were very looking forward to this trip. I worked hard on getting to be a globalist so I expect to be treated like a valuable customer. . The reasons of giving 2-4 stars are: The tatami room we had only with a roof top view. And only two people’s breakfast are free. We need to pay for our two kids. When we arrive the area by train, we had difficulty finding a taxi and it’s hard to communicate with the hotel. Spa is small and indoor. No view. It’s hard to call a taxi to come pick us up due to shortage. In all, we won’t go back again as it’s not so enjoyable for us.

We had a suite, so not sure how other rooms are, but we were pretty happy. The staff was super helpful and the shuttle bus is very handy to get to the gondola or into town. Was hoping the grounds would be a bit more “sprawling” to lounge around in, but even if it was, we would not have had time. The hot springs require you to be naked and with other people, so it is awkward and VERY hot. Personally I enjoyed the bubbles in my soaking tub just as much.

Booked the Regency Suite (tatami) using points and my family & I loved every minute in it. The complimentary oranges, wine and chocolate were a nice touch. The dinner at the French restaurant was delicious, and the onsen was relaxing. I’m only taking off a star because the hotel didn’t inform me that they offer shuttle service to & from Odawara station when I booked/ when they emailed me instructions from Gora station. It would have cut down my travel time quite a bit. Fyi: you can walk to KamiGora cable car station from the hotel and transfer to the Hakone Tozan ropeway from there via Sounzan (first cable car leaves at 833am on weekdays, don’t bother going earlier!). The ropeway takes you to Togendai for the cruise ship. The hotel was very helpful in providing us with the details of the route. For transfer to/from Gora Station you’ll have to call the hotel for the free shuttle. The longest I had to wait was 10 minutes and there was no difficulty.

This is a superb hotel. We loved every minute of our stay here. the design and interior are modern, the staff is amiable and attentive and the food is exquisite. We would have loved to extend our welcome if not for the hefty price tag. Other than that, the spa area could be renovated and changed to match the rest of the beautiful modern hotel. The onsen "only" consists of one big pool. A saune, outside area, cold pool and so on would be a nice addition.
